Community Learning

Adults decide on outings each month. Staff members will encourage trips in the community using private and public transportation. Adults are asked to volunteer in fundraising projects such as the gift- wrapping program. Adult Programming will include activities such as preparation of simple meals and grocery shopping, community integration, motor development, independent living skills, augmentative communication and accessibility including assistive technology.

NHC's adults use the community as a resource for functional learning. In the community many skills are emphasized, such as motor skills (going up and down stairs), safety awareness, social skills in a restaurant while eating, and the opportunity to help with volunteer projects. Trips into the community include some of the finest attractions: Navy Pier, museums, Botanical Gardens, and shopping in downtown Chicago.
